Preparing your body for pregnancy: starting with the L5 Method

A few weeks ago, I got a message from a friend asking for advice on beginning to prep her body for pregnancy/delivery. This isn’t an uncommon question or concern from women who are trying to conceive or plan to start trying in the future. Pregnancy may be a very unique experience for the female body however the prerequisites in preparation are generally the same as that of someone who isn’t in season of conception.

Let’s take the L5 Method as our foundation.

Nutrition

Eating mostly whole foods. Having a protein & fiber source at each meal. Drinking plenty of water. Eating slowly.

Additional considerations: Adding in a prenatal vitamin could help supplement some of the nutrients that support pregnancy, like folic acid/folate and choline.

Training

Adhering to a training plan that fits your life. One that utilizes progressive overload principles.

Additional Considerations: Implementing breathwork, core work and pelvic floor work to ensure you go into pregnancy with a strong base will help make training around and through the physical changes easier.

Movement

Engaging in non-exercise activity.

Additional Considerations: Keep in mind that the first trimester tends to have the highest barrier to movement & exercise due to things like nausea and fatigue, so staying active when possible is vital.

Mindset

Practicing a growth mindset. Embracing challenges or obstacles as lessons.

Additional Considerations: I’d encourage beginning to explore your beliefs and mindset around pregnancy & birth now and to think of your birth plan with as much intention as you gave or would give to planning a wedding or important event AND to stay flexible with how things pan out.

Habits

Behaviors that support our health goals that either are or eventually become second nature. Things like drinking water before coffee or reading before bed.

Additional Considerations: This would be the time to look for low hanging fruit so that your habits and routines feel well established going into the physical and hormonal changes you experience in pregnancy and throughout the postpartum season too.

Pregnancy is another season of life that requires us to stand firm in our foundational lifestyle habits while being adaptable. The basics never stopped working, even when pregnant.
